question about installing a dimmer switch to control a wall light?

I have taken a live feed from a socket(A 3 pin plug socket not a light switch ) and connected it to a fused spur with a wire going to my wall light ,my question is is it possible to install a dimmer switch and how is this done –i have tried a 400 watt dimmer instead of the fused spur but when i turned the power back on the dimmer blew. The wall LIGHT has 3 10 watt halogen bulbs which are quite bright any help appreciated

It is possible to do what you ask, and it is done quite often. Since you had trouble the first time, I suggest you call a qualified professional electrician to do the work. Maybe 2 hours total, probably 1 hour, unless you have a major problem that you are not describing.
